Canary Islands
"Pasodoble Islas Canarias"
Words by: José M. Tarridas
Music by: Teobaldo Power y Lugo-Vina
In use to: 2003
Before May 30, 2003, when a more official local anthem was granted to the islands, there existed unofficial anthems for the Canary Islands. The anthem presented here is the "Pasodoble Islas Canarias", primarily used by those Canarians loyal to Spain. The text of the anthem, however, emphasizes the pre-hispanic culture of their ancestors (the "Guanches"), and it uses the ancient Guanchean names for the islands in the anthem.
There is also an anthem used by the indepdentist movements on the islands, the "Canto de Tierra". Music files and lyrics can be found at http://www.elguanche.net/simbolospatrios.htm.
